In the human medical field there are a variety of health care
workers that perform specific tasks. It is the same in the veterinary
field. Most private practices have veterinarians, veterinary technicians,
veterinary assistants, receptionists and kennel workers. Some individuals
perform dual roles but the veterinarian and the veterinary technician are
the only ones who have gone to school specifically to learn about veterinary
medicine.
The average length of education for a veterinarian is 7-8 years, and
2-4 years for a veterinary technician. At some universities, they
may even train together. Both the veterinarian and the veterinary
technician take state and/or national examinations to ensure that your
pet is receiving care from qualified personnel.
In the state of Colorado, only technicians that have graduated from
an American Veterinary Medical Association approved school may take the
state board test. In Colorado, technicians that have passed the boards
test may call themselves Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). We
at CVAH only employ CVT's because we want the highest quality pet care
for your pet.
Human medical facilities employ lab technicians, anesthetists, surgical
nurses, radiology technicians, dental hygienists, etc.. In veterinary
medicine, the veterinary technician must be skilled and proficient in all
these roles. Only through proper education and training can they
successfully and safely treat your pet. A veterinary technician CANNOT
perform any surgeries, prescribe drugs or diagnose any illness. However,
all other responsibilities can be carried out under the supervision of
a veterinarian. In fact, they are taught over 200 essential tasks
before graduating. Many people do not realize the time, money and dedication
technicians have invested in their education and career. Next time
you meet a veterinary technician at your pet's veterinary hospital, take
a moment to stop and thank them for all their hard work and dedication
to your pet and the medical field. After all, as a consumer, you deserve
the best care for your pet.
